Allen Bergeron, Chairman of Honor Flight Austin share with Kevin Schaller at KXAN the good news. Honor Flight Austin will be able to visit the WWII Memorial for our 10th flight on Oct. 11-12, 2013

“Honor Flight Austin chairman Allen Bergeron says he was getting conflicting information about whether the memorial would be open to the public when about 35 veterans from the Austin area arrive in Washington.

However, Bergeron got the okay Wednesday for a planned trip…and the National Park Service doesn’t plan to stop veterans from visiting the site.

“[The veterans] are saying we stormed the beaches in Normandy and we’ll storm the beaches in D.C.,” said Bergeron, referring to the veterans considering an attempt to get into the memorial, even if the site is closed.

“I may be getting younger, but some of these guys need to make the trip right now, they deserve it,” said WWII Veteran Phil Shaw Jr., 93.

A group of veterans walked past barriers at the closed World War II memorial Tuesday with help from members of Congress.”
